Two Melbourne fires in same suburb deemed unlinked but suspicious

Police believe two fires that broke out streets apart from each other in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton South are unlinked but suspicious.

Emergency services were called to an apartment fire at Tennyson Street, Clayton South about 10pm yesterday.

Firefighters brought the flames under control, and a shortly after a man was arrested nearby.

He was taken to hospital for assessment, police said.

Only two blocks away, a shed at the rear of a property on Culshaw Avenue caught alight at 10.20pm, but the fire was quickly extinguished.

A woman and two children received minor injuries and were taken to hospital.  

Police believe the two fires are unlinked at this stage.

Two crime scenes have been established as police investigate the causes of both blazes.
