Turnbull pledges GST discussion

Malcolm Turnbull says if re-elected he will sit down with state premiers to again discuss the distribution of GST revenue.

Western Australia says it is not getting its fair share of the consumption tax revenue, partly because it has resisted the eastern states' addiction to poker machine revenue.

The prime minister told ABC radio in Perth on Tuesday he could not change the GST formula by decree and would discuss WA's "raw deal" with state and territory leaders after the election.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten told reporters in Perth on Tuesday he would work with the premiers to improve federal-state relations.

"We will absolutely work with the states of whatever political persuasion to make sure they get a fair deal," Mr Shorten said.

"What we will also do in the meantime is properly invest in the infrastructure, the education, the health care, jobs and renewable energy which I think this state could be a real leader in the future."
