Rise to the GST to be discussed at tax conference

Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison are expected to outline their plans for taxation reform in their first major economic address on Thursday.

The prime minister and treasurer will speak at the Economic and Social Outlook conference in Melbourne as debate continues over whether Australia should raise the GST from 10 to 15 per cent.

Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens, Treasury secretary John Fraser and opposition leader Bill Shorten will reportedly also attend the conference.

The government has said all options are on the table when it comes to tax, including a broader or higher GST.

But any changes would be taken to an election and be put in the context of broader tax reform involving the states.

Mr Shorten says the Liberal party need to "come clean" on what changes are proposed.

He said a higher GST was a "toxic idea" and most Australians don't want a rise.

"They're sort of dancing around the issue - they want a 15 per cent tax, they're scaring people," he said.
