Troubled Thorpe still battling in hospital

Ian Thorpe continues to fight an infection in a Sydney hospital, with his manager saying the troubled swimming great's condition has not changed.

The 31-year-old five-time Olympic gold medallist caught a super bug while in hospital, near his home in the Swiss town of Ronco Sopra Ascona, for a shoulder operation.

His manager James Erskine on Thursday morning confirmed there was no change in Thorpe's condition.

"That's exactly what the situation is," he told AAP.

"He's still battling an infection in hospital and that's the latest."

On Wednesday Erskine reported that Thorpe was "pretty poorly" but wasn't in intensive care and was fighting the infection.

He also rubbished reports that Thorpe could lose the use of his left arm.

Thorpe's father revealed in February that the swimmer was battling depression.

He sought help in early 2014 after being found disoriented near his parents' Sydney home, having taken a combination of antidepressants and medication for a shoulder injury.

Thorpe was sent to Bankstown Hospital for a medical assessment and then entered a rehabilitation program.
