Man given community sentence for bashing transgender muso in Sydney's Newtown

A man who bashed a transgender rocker at an inner Sydney pub has been given community service and an 18-month good behaviour bond.

Alexis Ozanne was warned he was perilously close to jail by Magistrate Anthony Spence as he handed down the sentence at Newtown Local Court on Tuesday afternoon.

"You better start keeping your behaviour in check," Mr Spence warned Ozanne.

He pleaded guilty to punching Stephanie McCarthy three times at a Newtown Hotel on June 6.

Ozanne hadn't planned the attack, rather it was an over reaction to an argument he and his co-accused, Nicholas Wells, had with Ms McCarthy at the Town Hall Hotel - "The Townie" - in the early hours of a Sunday morning, the court heard.

Ms McCarthy was hit three times by Ozanne after pushing his chest and grabbing him and Wells by the shirt collar.

After being belted she grabbed a plastic schooner and charged the men, who then punched and kicked her to the ground, leaving her with substantial injuries.

Ozanne was subsequently charged with affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing cannabis.

He was given community service and the bond for the affray and assault convictions, and fined $600 for possessing cannabis.

Wells' matter remains before the courts.
