Commuters on Sydney's western train line are facing delays after equipment was vandalised in Penrith.

Trains are not running between St Marys and Penrith due to the damage, Transport for NSW said.

Buses are replacing trains for this part of the rail network.

Passengers may need to change at Penrith or St Marys to complete their trips.

Adding to frustration over the delays, passengers have not been able to top-up at affected Opal machines and are being urged to use credit cards or the Opal app.

Trains are still running on the Blue Mountains Line, but are delayed.
