Victorian jockey to have facial surgery after second serious accident in two days at Melbourne track

Victorian Jockey Talia Rodder will have surgery for a severe facial laceration after being kicked in the head by a horse at Caulfield Racecourse.

It was the second serious incident in as many days at the Melbourne track.

Victorian Jockeys' Association chief executive Des O'Keefe said Rodder had been cleared of any brain, neck or spinal injuries but required surgery for a facial wound.

Mr O'Keefe said he wasn't sure of the circumstances but it appeared Rodder must have been kicked, or stood on, after falling from a horse during trackwork early on Tuesday.

"She has been transferred from Epworth Hospital to Royal Melbourne Hospital and is expected to undergo surgery shortly for a severe facial wound," Mr O'Keefe said.

"But all other scans on her brain, neck and spine are absolutely clear.

"She's conscious but certainly in need of some significant surgery regarding a facial laceration."

Trackwork rider Liz Rice remains in an induced coma at the Alfred Hospital after suffering head injuries in a fall at Caulfield on Monday.

She is in a critical but stable condition.
