Toyota announces urgent safety recall of over 20,000 HiLux vehicles

Toyota Australia has today announced a recall of more than 20,000 HiLux vehicles due to a safety issue relating to the cars' brake system.

The recall relates to 23,957 Toyota's Diesel HiLux and Fortuner vehicles produced between June 2018 and December 2018.

"Within the brake booster of involved vehicles, the strength of the resin piston could degrade due to improper moulding conditions during production," Toyota said in a statement.

"If this were to occur, repeated operation of the brake pedal may cause the piston to break, potentially causing loss of braking assist and therefore increasing the vehicle stopping distance."

Anyone with one of the impacted cars has been advised to take it to a Toyota dealer for inspection where they can have their brake booster replaced free of charge "if applicable".

The company has advised consumers it will take approximately three hours to replace the brake booster however some replacements may take longer.
