Tourist couple shot at while sleeping in motor home

A tourist has told of the terrifying moment she and her partner were shot at while asleep inside their motor home while holidaying in Central Queensland.

The New Zealand woman, who declined to be identified, told 9NEWS they were woken by a bang around 5am while parked on the side of the Bruce Highway in Rockhampton.

"It gave us a hell of a fright," she said.

"Nearly hit my partner and we just quickly dived to the floor.

"On opening the blind we could see a vehicle was on the hill here and a second shot came through virtually instantly."

One of the bullets shattered a window, coming just centimetres from where the couple was cowering.

"When we saw where those bullets gone through and what they did, we are just very grateful that we’re both okay," the woman said.

Police are not sure who the shooter is or why the couple was targeted.

Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey said it appeared to be a random attack, possibly involving a rifle.

"Very, very concerning the fact that two people were sleeping in this when a firearm was discharged," he said.
