Top End doctor wins top health gong

Dr Christine Connors has been awarded the prestigious Menzies Medallion for being a trailblazer in Northern Territory public health for more than 25 years.

Dr Connors was presented the award at the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin on Friday night in recognition of her significant contribution to indigenous health in the Top End.

The general practitioner has worked on the ground in remote Aboriginal communities with the NT Department of Health and Community Services and is the Program Director of the NT Preventable Chronic Disease Program.

Menzies Director Professor Alan Cass says Dr Connors is a tireless campaigner for Aboriginal health and has been involved with Menzies since 1994.

"Accessible and high quality primary health care is vital to closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous health outcomes and Christine's work is playing a critical role in this" he said.
