One of NSW's most senior police officers has claimed online pornography has contributed to a rise in domestic violence, and called for better education of young men to combat the issue.

"We are seeing more young people put before courts than we have ever seen."

Mr Murdoch said it was "common sense" that pornography had an effect on relationships between young people, but said the answer was education and did not advocate for censorship.

He said more conversations about relationships and respect for women needed to he held at home.

"Men need to wake up to the fact that domestic violence is men’s problem," he said.

"Violence against women will only stop when men stop perpetrating the violence."
