Woman charged with murder after house fire leaves three children dead

A woman has been charged with three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder after a fire tore through a home in Toowoomba, Queensland, killing three of her children.

Seven people were inside a home in Harristown when a fire broke out about 12.30am on Wednesday, May 7.

Ellouisa Brighton, 36, along with four children and her 34-year-old partner, escaped the blaze.

The body of Brighton's nine-year-old son was found inside after firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Her daughters, aged four and seven years old, died at Queensland Children's Hospital from injuries they sustained in the fire.

Her 34-year-old partner, an 18-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy escaped from the fire and suffered minor injuries.

The woman was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital under police guard.

She remains in a critical condition.

Police said there was an extensive investigation combining Child Protection Detectives, the Homicide Investigation Unit, and specialist forensic police.

Today, police charged her with three counts of murder (domestic violence), three counts of attempted murder, and one count of arson.

Last week, police said they were investigating whether the children had been doused in an accelerant before the fire tore through the home.

The woman will face court at a later date.

Fresh floral tributes have been laid outside the home.
