Young couple killed after car hits tree in inner Melbourne suburb

A young man who died with his girlfriend in a horror crash in Melbourne's inner-east overnight has been identified.

Toorak man Marcus Watson was driving a BMW down Clendon Road in Toorak about 8pm when it mounted the curb and crashed into a concrete pillar.

The impact caused the BMW to wrap around a tree before it exploded into flames.

Watson and his 22-year-old partner died at the scene.

Residents have told 9News they rushed to help after hearing screams coming from the car, but there was nothing they could do.

"I heard the screech and a crash, knew it was something really bad that had happened," resident Fran Penfold said.

Emergency services rushed to the scene to find the car fully alight.

It took crews nearly 10 minutes to put out the blaze.

Police have warned road users about the dangers of excessive speed and fatigue as many hit the road for the long weekend.

Investigations are ongoing as police try to determine exactly what happened.
