Labor gearing up for war over government budget cuts

Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s political fortunes appear fully revived 100 days after the Liberal leadership spill, with a well-received budget bringing voters back to the Coalition.

Opinion polls have bounced back in Mr Abbott's favour following a politically tough few months.

More good news for the government includes Westpac's report of a 6.4 percent bounce in consumer confidence on the back of Treasurer Joe Hockey’s budget release.

Coalition MPs are believed to be newly-confident as their Labor opposites attempt to make superannuation into a political battleground.

The opposition wants a $14 billion crackdown on concessions for the rich, saying the cost of the Age Pension will soon outstrip current tax breaks.

Labor will back five budget measures worth $2.4 billion in savings, but will not commit to reinstating measures resulting in $80 billion of health and education cuts for the states.
