Tony Abbott says he would have won the 2016 federal election

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has claimed he would have won the 2016 federal election if he remained in the leadership.

Mr Abbott told Sky News he believed the Liberal Party would win the election in August, regardless of its leadership, because of the stagnancy of the Labor party.

“Whoever led the Coalition, I believe we were going to win the next election, and win it quite strongly, because obviously on all the evidence so far, the Labor Party can’t learn and it hasn’t changed.”

The Member for Warringah conceded he had made multiple mistakes during his prime ministerial term, and described his decision to award a knighthood to Prince Philip as an “own goal”.

“There were some things that could have been done better… and obviously there was a knighthood, that was obviously a bit of an own goal,” he said.

Mr Abbott also said he was undecided on his political future.

“I’m not going to rush in the final decision,” he said.
