Toddler drowns in Canberra backyard pool

A toddler has drowned in a backyard swimming pool in Canberra.

The 21-month-old boy was found in the pool in Fisher on Wednesday night and taken to Canberra Hospital but could not be revived.

Police are investigating his death but don't believe it's suspicious.

"Unfortunately this tragic situation is a reminder that water and children can be a very dangerous combination," Acting Superintendent Matt Craft said on Thursday.

A brief will be prepared for the coroner.
