What to do if your child starts swearing

When it comes to our children, there are a lot of core memories that bring a smile to parents' faces.
Their first laugh, first steps and even losing a first tooth can stir up a range of emotions, but when your little one drops their first F-bomb, many mums and dads are unsure of how to react.
Parenting expert, Gen Muir, admitted even she laughed out loud when her two-year-old first swore in front of her, but some parents even go so far as to try to catch it on film and then post it online.

"It just sounds so strange coming from a little toddler at two, but honestly if we can control that laugh because any time we give our child a big reaction, we're going to fuel that fire," she said.
"So they love getting a reaction from us and if we can limit that reaction, pause and not go straight for discipline, it can make a big difference in not having it repeat."
Gen said the days of threatening to wash their mouth out with soap are gone and in case your little one is actually struggling with their pronunciation of the word "truck", it's important to take a gentle approach with them.

"We've got to nip this in the bud and go slow and work out why your child is swearing," she said.
"Be gentle in your approach and discuss what that word actually means and let kids know the impact that can have on others.
"And of course, we've got to model it, it's up to us because they're watching everything we do."
