'We've never had floodwaters like this in my time'

Thousands of residents have been told to get to higher ground as floodwaters sweep through dozens of Victorian communities.

The traumatic weather event has seen several homes completely engulfed by floodwaters with many families unsure what the future holds for them.

Keiranne Speechley and her son Will told Today they are nervous about what they will find after watching their home in Whiteheads Creek, north of Seymour, go under last night.

"We're quite concerned on what we're going to face when we do get home," Keiranne told Today.

"Definitely weren't expecting it to get this bad. We've never had floodwaters like this in my time.

"I know there were the high floods in '74, but I don't believe they were as high as what they are now."

Keiranne said she was lucky enough to seek shelter at a friend's house, but many others in the community and surrounds are facing uncertainty on what they will find when floodwaters subside.

"Everything's just hour by hour at the moment to see where we're going to be and how quickly these waters might subside to get home and assess where we are," she said.
