The iconic breakfast condiment, Vegemite, is typically spread on buttered toast, but some adventurous Aussies have explored other ways to enjoy its tangy goodness.

From using it as a stock substitute in your bolognese, to Vegemite cheese spread, Vegemite noodles and even Vegemite oats for breakfast, it seems imagination is the only limit.

But one Western Sydney cafe has really branched out, creating a Vegemite latte, with surprise results.

Some may question whether this is taking fusion and food creativity too far, but the Today hosts wanted to try one out for themselves to decide.

"Pole's Patisserie in Penrith, have gone out on a limb here, rolling out Vegemite lattes for the past few months, so today we're going to put them to the test," Karl Stefanovic said.

Senior coordinators Tina and Tanisha came into the studio this morning to share how they make the unique coffees, saying the trick is not to overdo it with how much you squirt into the cup.

"Less is more when it comes to this, so we're not squirting a half a bottle of Vegemite in and putting coffee on top, remember less is more," they said.

The pair made Karl and Sarah an iced version of the drink, but shared they also offer a hot latte as well.

Karl and Sarah were pleasantly surprised by the concoction. Today

The trick is to smear a thin layer around the edge of the cup, then fill it with ice.

You then mix a small squirt of Vegemite in with the coffee shot - in a separate cup, ensuring it is completely blended in.

"You don't want to get this sudden blob of Vegemite to hit you while drinking it," they said.

That mix is then poured over the ice and the cup is topped off with your milk of choice.

"It's actually not that bad, very subtle," Sarah told her guests after trying her iced drink.

"I like it, it's kind of good - like it shocks you," Karl added after sipping the hot espresso version.
