Americans anxious there will be violence and unrest if Trump loses

White House insiders have warned potential violence and unrest will erupt if today's election doesn't go Donald Trump's way.

The former US president has assured his supporters "aren't violent people" and he doesn't have to warn them not to riot if he is defeated by Kamala Harris.

But after the chaos that erupted in the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, when Joe Biden beat Trump, Americans are understandably anxious.

A man has already been taken into custody this morning after he was allegedly caught trying to enter the Capitol Visitor Centre with weapons and the Secret Service is on high alert for more rioting and unrest.

"I think a lot of people feel very anxious. You can't have two more different visions of America than the two visions that are being put forth," US political commentator Jane Hall told Today.

"And we had an insurrection right behind us on January 6, I think people are very worried about divisions, but I am hopeful that the divisions are not nearly as real as Donald Trump particularly has been trying to portray."
