Unique way you could save $800 feeding your family

Families around the country are feeling the pinch of cost of living pressures, but some savvy households are going to extreme lengths to bag a bargain.
Today money expert, Joel Gibson joined Karl and Sarah to share some of the more interesting penny-pinching methods he has uncovered.

“I’ve been looking for extreme money-saving techniques recently and someone contacted me about the value you get when you buy half a cow, if you are really big on your beef - beef prices are up 12 per cent over the past year,” he said.
“So if you buy an entire half a cow - get the butcher to separate it into all the different cuts, compared to supermarket prices you will save yourself around $800.”
Fair warning, Joel said it will equate to around 100kg worth of meat so you will need a big freezer to store it all, but your family will be fed for around six months and it turns out quite a few families have cottoned onto the idea.
Farmstead Meats, a NSW operation, told Joel their orders are up around 133 per cent because of the cost of beef, so people are actually taking up this extreme measure to save on their meat.
“There would be any number of places I’d imagine you can do this if you go ahead and buy in bulk,” he said.
Bulk buying to save is also an option across supermarkets, particularly places like Costco, Joel said.
“Whether it’s the supermarkets or bulk-buy warehouses, fruit and vegetable markets or wherever, the only limitation is storage and how long it is going to last,” he said.
Another interesting hack Joel shared was one he found from the podcast team Kick It Forward, who had a listener share if you get an RACV e-bike subscription (in Victoria), which costs around $47 per year, you can actually get a free lift rather than spending money on a taxi.
“If your bike breaks down, or you get too tired to ride, they’ll come pick you up in a maxi-taxi,” Joel said.
“It’s a cheap and easy way get home from the pub for around $4.”
