Social media is currently flooded with the viral Dot Cake trend.

And we’re here for it. It’s a lot of fun — and while naysayers might point out that it’s just a cupcake, there’s nothing wrong with repackaging a cupcake and affirming the joy that a mouthful of a tiny cake can bring.

Here’s our Today Show take on the Dot Cake trend.

The trend started with New York bakery The Dot Cakes (with their customisable designs) that were a hit at Butterfield Market, causing queues out the door.

Social media loves them because their smooth top covered in 100s & 1000s looks stunning, they have an ASMR appeal with a scoop into the top and they’re actually easy to replicate at home if you can’t get to NYC.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 x packet of your favourite cake mix (+ any extra eggs, milk and butter for the mix) OR 1 x your favourite cakeany flavour you like
  • 1 x quantity of your favourite buttercream frosting (250g butter, 3 cups icing sugar, 2 Tbsp milk) OR pre-made buttercream in your flavour of choice.
  • 100s & 1000s
  • Optional, any sauce or drizzle you’d like to include in your layers
  • Small ramekins or bowls, to serve

Method:

  • Bake your cake as per the packet instructions or recipe and bake it in a rectangular pan — allow to cool completely.
  • Meanwhile, whip up your butter cream frosting and put your sprinkles into a shallow bowl.
  • Use your ramekin (or a cookie cutter that fits your ramekin) to cut rounds of cake for each serving.
  • Pipe a thin layer of frosting into the bottom of your ramekin, add a round of cake (add a drizzle of sauce or syrup if you’re using it to soak into the cake) and then fill the cup up with a thick layer of frosting. Scrape the top to level it off even and flat with the rim and then dunk the cup icing first into the sprinkles to get an even coating on the top.
  • Serve your Dot Cake in the cup and enjoy!
