The guests and reporters on Today have had to handle all kinds of interruptions from nature during live crosses and interviews.

From a parrot getting a little too cozy with weather presenter Tim Davies, to crickets and mosquitoes attacking our in-the-field reporters, Christine Ahern and Andrea Crothers - and a giant spider scuttling across the weather cam when Weekend Today's Jayne Azzopardi was filling in.

But during this morning's show, a rogue magpie decided to steal the spotlight while our guests were talking about a rather serious subject.

Dr Kim Hansen and Dr Maureen Williams were discussing the problem with hospital emergency department delays and why fewer are GPs bulk-billing new customers.

And Today hosts Karl and Sarah were deeply invested in the interview until something odd appeared behind their guests.

"Sorry, there's something very big behind you," Karl informed his guests.

"Can you see that magpie? Oh, dear it looks like you're going to need an emergency department up there."

The interruption brought a smile to his guests' faces and they were able to remain professional and carry on their responses.

"I'm just riveted by this - thank you for bearing with all sorts of problems this morning, especially a giant-sized magpie in the background," Karl said.

"I know how you feel, I've got to deal with one here on the set," he said of his Collingwood supporter co-host.
