Friendly donkeys make outback pub their local watering hole

A small outback town made famous thanks to the original Mad Max film franchise is now drawing crowds for an entirely different reason.

Silverton, located just west of Broken Hill, is home to the Silverton Hotel, a bush pub frequented by some quirky local characters.

Now, a drove of friendly donkeys has decided to call the pub home.

Deggy, Jenny, Jack and Jill roam the small town each day and the friendly folk at the Silverton Hotel are always happy to see them when they drop in.

"The tourists love them and they're really a popular drawcard to the area, but the biggest problem is, like any animals, they have their own mind and they come and go as they please," the quartet's owners Peter and Patsy Price told Today.

"We're on a 12,000 acre common here, so they've got plenty of ground to roam on all the time."

Peter said the donkeys had so far made it onto the front deck and poked their heads in the doorway, but they've yet to actually wander inside the pub.

Outback events like the Mundi Mundi Bash and Broken Heel Festival draw big numbers into town, with many visitors particularly putting the Silverton Hotel on the list of places to visit.

And Patsy said everybody loved the donkeys.

"They know the donkeys more than Pete and I or anyone else," she said.

"When they do turn up, all they ask is 'where are the donkeys, where are the donkeys?" Peter added.
