A trip away is said to keep the doctor at bay, but new research suggests booking your next holiday well in advance actually could have health benefits.

The data from Carnival Cruise Line revealed 87 per cent of Aussies feel happier when they've booked a holiday, while 74 per cent of those surveyed said they felt less stressed.

Australian Traveller's Quentin Long told Today 59 per cent were actually more productive at work and 43 per cent were more productive at home, knowing they had something to look forward to.

"Also, 51 per cent of mums and dads said they feel like they're a better parent if they've got a holiday booked, so it's really good for your mental health to book a holiday," he said.

Not only was booking the holiday good for you, research from Edith Cowan University suggested there were also health benefits to gain from the actual destination itself.

"You do more physical activity, you have social interactions and a lot of them are new social interactions, so you get positive emotions out of travel and those experiences," Quentin said.

"All of that alleviates stress, which is actually anti-aging and actually wards off all the ageing that happens to us both mentally and physically by having those experiences and those emotions.

"So travel in a nutshell, booking it is great for your mental health and doing it is great physically and anti-aging as well."
