The 2025 Academy Awards are over and while there were a lot of well-deserving winners who went home with an Oscar, there were also plenty of eyes on the red carpet fashions.

The stars invoked Old Hollywood with their looks this year and there were some who had a special meaning behind the frocks they wore.

Media personality and friend of Today Christian Wilkins was glued to his TV screen watching the ceremony and revealed some of his favourite picks from Hollywood's night of nights.

"Let's start with Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, they both made an entrance in a couple of ways," Christian said.

"They had two looks which were absolutely exceptional, Ariana wore Schiaparelli both on the red carpet and another for her duet with Cynthia.

"The pink outfit she wore was haute couture with over 190,000 crystals sewn in, it reminded me of Glinda coming down in that bubble."

Christian also pointed out Cynthia's first dress, which paid homage to Hattie McDaniel, the first black woman to win an Oscar for her role in Gone With The Wind.

And both she and Ariana paid tribute to the Wizard of Oz universe with signature feature pieces during their opening performance of Defying Gravity.

Cynthia's nails were inspired by the yellow brick road and Emerald City from their film and Ariana's performance gown featured a ruby red slipper over the shoulder.

Metallics were also on show and the colour palette of the night was very subtle.

Zoe Saldana accepts the Best Actress In A Supporting Role award for "Emilia Pérez" onstage during the 97th Annual Oscars at Dolby Theatre on March 02, 2025 in Hollywood, California.

There were a couple of gowns Christian said he absolutely loved, including Michelle Yeoh's backless Balenciaga and Raye's custom Vivienne Westwood.

But there were a couple of fashion choices he said were the clear winners for him on the night.

"I think Zoe Saldana's custom YSL might have been my favourite," he said.

"And Timothee Chalamet always stands out, he's in Givenchy and this is actually our first glimpse at Sarah Burton's Givenchy since she just left McQueen."

Christian also noted Colman Domingo's Valentino red and black blazer and said Raye's red Westwood gown and Ariana's ruby slipper Shiaparelli performance dress were other favourites.

As for gowns he felt missed the mark, Christian said Gal Gadot's double-satin red Prada gown and Whoopi Goldberg's bulky navy blue Christian Siriano dress weren't great.

"Whoopi is an icon, no one is taking that away, I just felt the tailoring on her dress left little to be desired and it doesn't touch the bottom, for me it must always touch the ground," he said.

"And Gal, she's such a beautiful woman, I just felt like it didn't do her justice in Prada, they're usually amazing at tailoring, but it was a bit simple."
