Olivia Rodrigo sits down with Today on last leg of GUTS World Tour

The past three years have been a whirlwind for Olivia Rodrigo, who shot to international fame with the release of her debut single Drivers License in 2021.

Now, seven Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards and three Grammys later, the 21-year-old has got fans Down Under losing it with the Aussie leg of her GUTS World Tour.

Tonight Olivia performs the first of four Sydney shows, which will mark the end of a mammoth effort entertaining fans live all over the world and she revealed to Today what she plans to do next.

"I'm feeling so excited, these Sydney shows are actually the last of the GUTS World Tour and I couldn't think of a better place to spend my final shows than here," she said.

"I've been on tour for nine months and I'm so excited for a little bit of a break, but I'm always writing, writing makes me feel human and makes me feel good, so I'm always doing that, but it will be nice to kind of just not put a ton of pressure on myself."

Known for her role in Disney Plus' High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Olivia's singing career really took off right as the world was in lockdown during the covid-19 pandemic.

But while up-and-coming artists typically rely on a heavy schedule of touring to promote their work, Olivia told Today not being able to do that was really a blessing.

"In hindsight, I think it might have actually been better for my mental health," she said.

"Everything was kind of locked down and so I kind of got to live my regular life, I was in high school and I was still doing all my classes online and it was kind of like life as normal, but also something crazy is happening - so I think it helped me stay grounded."

Olivia got to meet Pesto the penguin when she was in Melbourne and said she wants to visit the beach, the Sydney Opera House and try some good sushi while she's in the Harbour city.

And while her star has skyrocketed exponentially over a short period of time, Olivia said she is eternally grateful and definitely doesn't take it for granted that people like her music.

"It's overwhelming sometimes and I have my fair share of just regular 21-year-old problems, but above all, I just feel incredibly lucky," she said.

"I just can't believe my luck and I'm so grateful that I've been put in this position to do what I love every day and get to travel the world."
