Julie Bowen is best known for her role as Claire Dunphy in the hit ABC sitcom Modern Family.

But her breakout big screen moment came when she starred alongside Adam Sandler in the 1996 blockbuster, Happy Gilmore.

So it was no surprise the subject of the hotly anticipated sequel came up during her chat with Today Extra host David Campbell this morning.

"We're in week three of shooting and it's remarkable to see how excited people are about this film," she said.

Julie played Happy's love interest, Virginia Venit, in the original and while she had to be careful about what she said about the sequel, she did say she's surprised at just how many cameos are in it.

"I'm not allowed to discuss it, but certainly everybody associated with golf ever and in pop culture, in rap, athletes of all stripes, it's bananas how many people are in this movie, but it's really fun."

Julie is stepping away from her comedy roots to next star in the Binge thriller Hysteria!, about the 'satanic panic' which swept the US in the 1980s.

"I grew up in a suburb of Baltimore and I remember it very clearly because it was something that was sort of whispered about, so it was fun to get to look at this period up close and personal, since as a kid I only heard about it," she said.

"I read the pilot and I got to the last little bit of the script and at first, it looks like the kids get to have all the fun, but it turns out that my character Linda is right smack in the centre of all of this and she might be coming unglued, but this was a delicious challenge that I couldn't wait to get stuck into."
