'You're barking up the wrong tree': Karl's NZ counterpart laughs off joining Australia

After Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce supported New Zealand becoming Australia's seventh state, following NZ Labor MP Jamie Strange's valedictorian speech suggesting it, the idea has further divided opinion.

While it would be possible under Australia's current constitution, Karl Stefanovic's Kiwi counterpart didn't seem sold on the idea - at first - when speaking with Today.

"We've already sent you Pharlap, Russell Crowe and Steve Hansen with some much-needed help for the Wallabies," Breakfast host Matt McLean said.

"I don't know what more you want from us - we are giving you all our best stuff and what do we get in return."

Matt noted the timing that Strange only suggested the idea of Australia adopting New Zealand while on his way out of parliament and the TVNZ talent doesn't think there is even much appetite for it with locals - or that they even care.

"I feel like we don't talk about you guys as much as you talk about us," he said.

"You're like the girls we went to university with who were desperate for a piece and I have to say you're barking up the wrong tree there."

But Karl and Sarah did manage to sway Matt to the idea, suggesting the two breakfast programs team up for a joint show in the near future.

"Let's get the ball rolling and get our tourism people together with New Zealand," Karl said.

"Let's do a joint show in Aotearoa in a couple of months time, suit up and bring the two countries together."
