The man behind one of Australia's most beloved TV characters in recent history has revealed he hated the iconic hairstyle the show made him wear.

Since 1995, Ryan Maloney has played Jarrod "Toadfish" Rebecchi who first appeared onscreen rocking a truly daggy mullet.

But Maloney told Today he was never a fan of the look and when they finally let his character lose it after four years on the show, that was one of his greatest highlights working on the show.

"No, I didn't like that mullet at all. I wanted to cut it for a number of years," Maloney told Today.

"Then they finally let me. I think my wife said if she knew me when I had that hair there would be no way we would be together today."

Maloney also said a large group of the cast and crew will be watching the final episode together at one of the set houses on "Ramsay Street" when it airs on Thursday.
