What it takes to be crowned Australia's best mullet
The search for Australia's best mullet is back, with the first winners for 2024 being crowned at Summernats over the weekend.
While the unique "business in the front - party at the back" hairstyle comes in all cuts, colours, shapes and sizes, there are key elements that determine a winner according to Mulletfest organiser, Laura Johnson.
"It's a tongue-in-cheek look at Australian culture and the haircut that is the mullet," Laura told Today.

"Our judges have a hard time choosing, they're looking at cut, condition, style, fit to category and then the stage presence matters also.
"So things like your whole package, your costume, your grooming, facial hair, all that sort of stuff and we just really have such a fun time."
Summernats saw 141 entries in round one of the competition over the weekend with mullet aficionados Anton Medivovic and Daniel Cooper taking out the top prizes for Grand Mullet Champ and Vintage Mullet and Senior Mullet respectively.

"I was wobbly in the knees for those initial moments, but it was surreal, I was surprised, overwhelmed - words just can't explain," Anton told Today.
"It's just brilliant, up until Laura gave me the belt, that's when it all sank in and I just embraced it."
The competition is now hitting the road and people of all ages can enter, with categories including Junior, Vintage, Ranga, Rookie, Extreme and Grubby - just to name a few.
