It's not uncommon that a pet dog will try to trick its owners into giving it a second serving of dinner.

But a recent study by Pedigree showed 69 per cent of domestic dogs are overweight or obese, proving the overfeeding is a real problem.

That's why Pedigree has created a "lie detector" collar, which will help monitor your dogs daily calorie intake and notify you if they are telling you porky pies.

"The collar detects the dog's movement, so if a dog's eaten and you log the amount of food that you put in the app on the phone that connects to the collar, the dog's movement, it says how many calories it's burnt throughout the day," dog behaviour specialist, Nathan Williams told Today.

"So if the dog's burnt more calories, you can afford to give a bit more food, but if the dog hasn't burnt calories and still is acting hungry, the collar will tell you if the dog needs food or not.

"You can look at the app to know if you can feed your dog more and it might say 'liar', in that case - your dog doesn't need anymore food."

Nathan said the collar hadn't been tested on humans, so Sarah Abo thought this was the perfect opportunity to try it out on co-host, James Bracey.

"OK James, how much are you enjoying your time here on the Today show," Sarah asked once the collar was attached.
