David Hughes has opened up about the moment he swapped comedy for politics a night after he was notably absent from the Logies.
While his former colleagues dressed up for television‘s night of nights on Sunday, Hughes was pictured on the Liberal Party’s election campaign in Geelong.

Although Hughes was still on the end of a barb from host Robert Irwin, who joked: “Speaking of beloved shows, apparently I hear Channel 10 is developing a reboot of Hughesy, We Have a Problem.”
“I think it’s called No, seriously, Hughesy, we have a problem.”
Speaking to Today on Monday, Hughes said he was swarmed by more media at the event than he ever has at The Logies as he spoke about
“I felt like it was my moment,” he said.
“All I want to do is change the government down here in Victoria. And I’m jumping on the Liberals to hopefully get the job done.”
The former Network 10 comedian turned political commentator said his career pivot into politics was triggered by the federal government’s tax changes in May.

But he revealed his family have not been entirely receptive to his sudden interest in politics.
Hughes said his wife has threatened to divorce him and his daughter has received complaints by friends at school.
“(My wife) says that if you actually enter politics, we have to get divorced so something to think about,” he said.
“My 13-year-old daughter the other day said, ‘Dad, I want you to stop this political stuff.’ I said, ‘Why?’
“She said, ‘My friend at school doesn’t agree with you.’ I said, ‘All right. Well, if a 13-year-old at a school doesn’t agree with me, I better stop’.”
Hughes, however, said he was “confident in my own mind that I’m doing the right thing”.
