A Western Australian dad who owns a massive Hot Wheels car collection said he could no longer blame the obsession on his son.

Ben Dawson bought his first Hot Wheels car just 18 months ago - originally for his two-year-old.

However, Ben's son is now three and over the toy cars, but that hasn't stopped his dad from continuing to grow his collection.

"I wasn't too interested in Hot Wheels but we ended up buying a set for my young son and from there it pretty much blew up," Ben told Today Extra.

He hasn't been collecting for long, but Ben's collection is already worth an estimated $10,000.

The collection is not just for collecting though, he does play with the cars.

He also custom-makes his own unique versions of the toys.

"It actually takes quite a lot of time, potentially up to eight hours sometimes to do one car," he said.

"I do a variety of different videos of Hot Wheels racers, customised cars, I do movie scene recreations and some movie skits," he said.

"I think from all the Hot Wheels creators, that's what sets me apart from everyone."
