Drone operator 'surprised' as 15 hammerheads swarm near swimmers

A drone operator who was in the water when a shiver of hammerhead sharks came within metres of swimmers at a Sydney beach yesterday said there was no danger to those nearby.

Remo Adoncello told Today the 15 sharks were chasing a bait ball about 200 metres from shore at Palm Beach yesterday when the alarm started to sound.

"I was a bit surprised, it's not often we see that many in a group," Remo told Today.

But as terrifying as it may have seemed for those in the water, Remo said the shark species isn't known for attacking people.

"They aren't one of the dangerous species," he said.

"We do see them occasionally, we've got a local hammerhead residents have named Bruce who shows up every few weeks but generally not in the numbers we saw yesterday."

The swimmers evacuated the water without any incident.
