After two years of pandemic and communities devastated by floods, droughts and fires, people looking after their mental health has taken a backseat.

Gotcha 4 Life Founder Gus Worland is taking the 'Mateship Miles' project to some of the worst impacted regional communities to encourage locals to open up and have a conversation.

Today's Karl Stefanovic joined Gus in Shepparton this morning, where local farms have faced some of the worst drought conditions in recent history.

Gus said the 'Mateship for Life' project "is about building mental fitness and the skills to have the conversations that we're not having in Australia at the moment".

"There's way too many of us worrying on our own, taking lives, due to depression so we're out on the road to talk to Australians about stuff that's really important," Gus said.

Gus said he had heard emotional stories and it was important to give locals a moment to talk about the things that are really important to them.

"If you build a safe enough environment, Aussies will chat. But at the moment, not enough are having those chats," he said.

"It is all because life has changed, the world has changed. People are wandering about scrambling how to get through stuff.

"There are so many people worrying alone at the moment. If you're worrying alone, then blokes in particular, we can make some really poor decisions."
