Lismore grandparents spend month apart after flood devastation

An elderly couple, married for 70 years, have finally been reunited after they were separated in the Northern NSW floods a month ago.

Lismore locals Robert and Patricia Cole were evacuated from their home on March 1 after rising flood waters left them with no other option but to flee.

The pair found refuge with a nearby neighbour on top of a hill and after four tough days, they were transported by helicopter to their granddaughter's home on the Central Coast.

But it was here the trauma of the situation started to sink in for Patricia, who lives with dementia.

The family had to make the tough call to hospitalise and separate her from her husband Robert on the March 11 and after 32 tough days apart, the pair were finally reunited this week.

Pat and Bob's son, Mark told Today his mum was doing much better now she was back with his dad and there quite a few tears shed when they were reunited.

"It was a long ordeal, but it was fantastic to see them together after a hell of a lot of work from my wife and a lot of people from Uniting - it was fantastic," Pat and Bob's son Mark told Today.

When asked how he felt about the reunion, Bob said it was "bloody wonderful" to see his wife again.

Mark's wife Chelle told Today their property is a shell, but the main priority were getting Bob and Pat back together.

"There is really no belongings left, we have got a few photos, but the property - we haven't really thought too much what to do with that next. We were just focused on getting Pat and Bob back together, and we will work that out later," she said.
