'Even in someone's bed': Snake sightings increase amid Queensland wild weather

With all the wild weather Queensland has been experiencing in recent weeks, parts of the state have seen an influx in snakes making their way into people's homes.

Gold Coast snake catcher, Mitch Thorburn, told Today while numbers do usually increase in the warmer weather, the storms and floods that have hit the southeast have left the reptiles upended.

"We've got all the frog eating species around at the moment and with the storm kind of misplacing them and rearranging a lot of their habitat, a lot of snakes are moving around just trying to refamiliarise themselves with their newly formed environment," he said.

Mitch said he is getting an average of around five calls a day, which equates to about 60 to 70 snake calls a fortnight.

"We find them in a lot of people's barbecues, lawnmowers, all sorts of places outside and when people leave their doors open during warm weather, they end up inside as well," he said.

"So I've caught them in people's pantries, in people's kitchens, lounges, all sorts of stuff like that. I've even caught them recently in people's beds."

For anyone who does happen to find a snake venturing onto their property or into their house due to the storms or warmer weather, Mitch said it's important not to try and handle it yourself and instead contact your local snake catcher who can contain and release it back into a more natural habitat.
