Gold Coast father targeted in alleged break-in and hit-run

A Gold Coast father who was allegedly hit by a stolen car while trying to defend his home from young criminals has called out the police response to what happened.

Ben Holland and his family were in their Robina home on Sunday night when his wife saw a group enter their front yard with their faces covered.

"I came through the door at the front and saw them in balaclavas and that angers me - that is gang mentality and I don't stand for that," Ben told Today.

So Ben chased them onto the street and that's when, he says, a car drove at him and tried to mow him down.

"It just hit me square on and I ended up on the bonnet and it dragged me up the road," he said.

Ben said the car swerved and he was thrown off, but then another car allegedly came at him deliberately.

"As I tried to get up I looked and there is the other SUV belting down the road and he swerved purposely at me and I dived over to the grass," he said.

"Luckily, it didn't hit me otherwise I wouldn't have made it - there is no chance."

Ben was left bruised, bleeding and suffered a broken rib.

But when he contacted police to report the attempted break-in and hit-run, he told Today a communications officer told him it was a traffic incident and "they have got more pressing things to do".

"I don't know if the police are doing enough, I haven't been interviewed, I haven't given a statement yet," he said.

"I tried to contact them, but they don't seem to want to do anything.

"I had CCTV sent to me and I have got no one to give it to - I have given it to Channel Nine because they are the only ones doing anything."

Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Chelepy is overseeing the state's youth crime response and told Today he was aware of what allegedly happened to Ben.

"We are certainly aware of that incident on the Gold Coast and I know our communication officers have been in contact and I'm sure our local officers will be out speaking with Ben soon," he said.
