Flood-impacted community running out of essentials as clean water cuts off

The community of Ingham in Queensland is isolated by floodwaters this morning, with local volunteers working around the clock to help get essential supplies to those stranded.

Andy Barra is one of the many pitching in, feeding tourists stuck at his roadhouse as the town grapples with power and food shortages.

Not only that, residents have just been alerted the water supply in Hinchinbrook Shire has failed.

With clean water and food supplies running low, Andy told Today the community was in dire straits.

"I'm a tough man, but this has really got me down," Andy said.

"It's frightening and it's heartbreaking, but we've got to keep going because of the people who are here, we've really got to help them."

Andy said the southern and northern approaches into Ingham from Townsville have been washed out by the Ollera Creek, which is making it difficult to get food essentials into town.

He said the townspeople are in good spirits, they just need a little help to get by until the waters recede.

"We're running out of everything, there's no water, we've got no milk, we've got no bread, the town is suffering pretty bad, so it's pretty well dire straits," he said.

"What we need most is bread and milk, children are going without, if somebody could help us out that would be a godsend."
