Queensland family woken to 20 metre tree crashing through roof

As ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred crossed the Queensland coast over the weekend, one family got the shock of their lives when a 20-metre tree fell through their roof while they were asleep.

Dini and Mark were in bed at their Tarragindi home on Saturday night, when they heard what they thought was a loud lightning crack just after 11pm.

"We came downstairs and couldn't see much, it wasn't really until a bit later that we actually realised the back end of the house had been crushed.," Dini told Today.

Dini revealed her teen daughter had actually said earlier that day she was worried about the towering silky oak coming down on the house one of these days, little did they know it would in a matter of hours.

"It was just so random it happened that night - we think she might be a witch," she said.

But all jokes aside, Dini said the tree landed in the best position it could, even though it was just a metre away from her children's bed heads.

"If it was going to fall, it really couldn't have fallen in a better spot, it went right between a big pergola and the back end of the house and it's just balancing nicely at the moment," she said.

The insurance people is scheduled to arrive Friday to assess the damage and with Queensland SES backed up with hundreds of call-outs, thankfully Dini and Mark's neighbours were there to help.

"The SES came and they said they couldn't do anything, they can't tarp it while the trees in there," she said.

"So at the moment, we've still got power and we're really kind of the luckiest unlucky family in the floods at the moment."
