DIY garden path installation guide

Step 1: Prepare the Area

Using a shovel, remove the grass and top layer of soil from both sides of the pavers to a depth of approximately 50 mm. Ensure the area is cleared evenly along the full length of the path.

Step 2: Install the Garden Edging

Cut the decking board to the required lengths for each side of the path.

Using offcuts of the decking board, cut pieces approximately 200–250 mm long and shape one end of each into a point to create timber pegs.

Position a peg at each end of the decking board and secure it to the back of the board using exterior-grade screws and a drill.

Place the edging alongside the path and use a rubber mallet to drive the pegs into the ground until the edging is firmly secured and level.

Step 3 : Prevent Weed Growth

Spray the exposed soil with a glyphosate-based herbicide (such as Roundup) in all areas where you want to prevent future weed and grass growth.

Allow the herbicide to dry for at least 30 minutes, or as recommended on the manufacturer’s instructions, before continuing.

Step 4 : Install the Weed Mat

Roll out the weed mat to cover the prepared area.

Staple the weed mat to the inside lower edge of the timber edging and secure the remaining sections to the ground using weed mat pegs.

Using a Stanley knife, carefully trim the weed mat around the outside edges of the pavers for a neat finish.

Mark the location of each plant and cut an opening approximately 200 mm × 200 mm in the weed mat where each plant will be installed.

Step 5 :  Plant Installation

Using a hand trowel or small garden shovel, dig a hole beneath each opening in the weed mat.

Position each plant in the hole and backfill with quality potting mix, ensuring the plant is secure and sitting at the correct height.

Water each plant thoroughly after planting.

Step 6 : Apply Decorative Pebbles

Spread the Tuscan pebbles evenly over the weed mat, filling all exposed areas around the pavers and plants. Aim for consistent coverage across the entire path for a clean, professional appearance.

Step 7 :  Install the Feature Pots

Fill each feature pot with approximately 1½ bags of potting mix.

Plant your chosen feature plant in each pot, firm the soil around the root ball, and water well.

Position one pot on each side of the entrance to create a balanced and welcoming entry.

Step 8 : Finish the Entry

Place the doormat in front of the doorway, ensuring it sits square and does not create a trip hazard.

Your entry path is now complete and ready to enjoy.
