Mixed martial arts is not a sport for the faint-hearted, but David Campbell was brave enough to face off with No.4 ranked UFC champ Robert Whittaker to learn some moves.

"I wouldn't mind maybe learning a couple of tips from a pro, if you're up for it," DC told his guest.

"What can you show us of something that's pretty basic, I just volunteered this - it's not set up, but please be gentle."

DC reluctantly asked for some fighting tips from Robert Whittaker. Today

And while the Today host instantly regretted his request once Whittaker towered up from the couch, the 33-year-old assured DC he didn't bring his "kicking chinos" so he wouldn't "go for the face".

"I'm just going to stomp your knee right there - a good old oblique kick," Whittaker said as he kicked DC.

Still standing, DC asked his guest what his favourite grip was when facing off with an opponent, but his co-host Sylvia knew the question was because DC's really a lover, not a fighter.

"It's his way of asking for a hug, I think," she said.

And after hugging it out, Whittaker shared more about how he prepares for a fight.

"You got to train, you got to train a lot, but there's a lot of moving parts - it's very hard to break down, but you've got to be fit, you've got to be strong," he said.

"You've got to spend time on the mats, you need to give more than your opponents and then you need all of that to come together with the mental fortitude to execute it on the perfect day."

The UFC is returning to Australia on February 9 and tickets go on sale tomorrow.
