Darwin bride reels in giant shark on her wedding day

Most brides would agree their new husband is a pretty decent catch, especially on her wedding day.

But one Darwin local hooked more than she bargained for - reeling in a large shark during the couple's wedding photoshoot.

Miccala and Brodie Toms had stopped by the local pub at Dundee Beach to cool off with a couple of pints between celebrations.

But when the bride saw a local teen fishing by the rocks, she got an idea for a couple of cute photos.

"It was a hot day on our wedding day, so we thought we'd go down to the Dundee Tavern for a few drinks and take some photos at the front," Miccala told Today.

"And because we love fishing in our family, this young fella who is a local there offered me his line and I thought this will be such a great pic if I can reel even a small fish."

But when something started to tug at the line from underneath the water - it definitely did not feel like a small fish.

"It was a shark and I'm like, 'Oh my god, it's a shark!'" Micalla said.

"Anyway, we reeled it in and as I went back, Brodie pulled up and I've just gone for a tumble, but we thought we'll just take a photo with that shark and throw it back in."

Impressed by his new wife's efforts with a fishing line and willingness to get her wedding dress dirty reeling a shark in, Brodie figured picking the thrashing shark up by the tail so he and Miccala could pose for their photographer was the least he could do.

"To be honest, I wouldn't be here without her, that's for damn sure," he told Today.

"She's given me three lovely children and made me the happiest I've ever been, so can't let it go now."
