Incredible amount US man spent on divisive Crocs footwear

A US man said there is one thing stopping him from holding the record for owning the most pairs of Crocs after already collecting an astonishing 2690 pairs of the colourful rubber clogs.

October is National Croc Month and to celebrate October 23 - better known as National Croc Day to some ... Today Extra spoke with New Yorker Doogie Lish Sandtiger about his unique collection.

"I got my first pair in the year 2007," Doogie said.

"I was a teenager who didn't know how to tie my shoes and Crocs have straps, so I put them on and they were great."

Over the past 16 years, Doogie has continued growing his collection and while his current tally is 2690 pairs, he said he wants to get to at least 4000 pairs before he registers for any official world record.

"I don't know, it's my biggest life's passion and I don't see myself stopping any time soon - I'm going to keep going," he said.

"My moniker is the Croc King, but I'm also the Croc Hunter - I shop all over the world, not just the US but every country, it's like a full-time job at this point.

"I'm constantly hunting down releases and sometimes they are only in certain countries, so it could be like 3am in my country and 10am in another country and a pair is dropping and I need to buy that pair, I need to get it."

Doogie told Today Extra his collection so far is worth an estimated US$500,000 ($791,000) and his most expensive pair set him back a tidy US$3000 ($4750).

"It's a collaboration with a Japanese artist, his name is Takashi Murakami," he said.

"It is what it is, it is part of a sneaker culture - Just the exclusivity, how rare they are - there's not a lot of them made."

The culture around Crocs is so major, not only is there a national day and month in honour of them, but they purchased a group of stars in space to help form their own constellation in the shape of a Crocs clog.

"They bought enough stars for every one of their influencers - it's the coolest thing, the coolest gift I have received in my life, it's a great honour," he said.
