Hollywood megastar Mark Wahlberg has said one of the hardest things about self-isolation is making sure his children understand the severity of the coronavirus pandemic.

The father-of-four is just one American going through the highs and lows of self-isolation with "cooped up children".

"The kids are wanting to go out, hang out with their friends, skateboard and do all that stuff," he told Today hosts Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon in a surprise phone call.

"They're getting a bit anxious but, other than that, we're trying to remain as positive as possible."

One of the things the family is enjoying, Wahlberg said, is quality time together, and they're doing everything they can to make one another laugh.

That said, the actor and producer has admitted that it's been hard sheltering his "invincible" children from news of the accelerating pandemic.

"They feel like, 'It won't happen to us, it won't affect us'.

"We have to be firm in keeping them home, making sure they are social distancing but it's tough," he said.

"They have the technology to connect with their friends, play video games. I'm being less strict with the amount of time they're playing video games."

The self-confessed "routine guy" said it's easy to feel disjointed at home as rules fly out the window, but one thing that's helped keep him grounded is working out.

The actor will be hosting a free workout via an Instagram live video. Instagram

The 48-year-old owns a stake in the Australian fitness franchise F45, and plans to livestream a workout later this morning.

"We're going to do a workout that only requires your own body weight," he explained.

"We are encouraging our members to continue to exercise, go on to the website, follow us and do the workout with us. We want to encourage people who have done so much work, not to lose the momentum and all those gains," he said.

The no-equipment workout is set to stream at 10am AEDT on his F45 gym's Instagram Live page.
