Give the gift of an experience or travel this Christmas

Christmas is almost here and if you're at a loss for last-minute gift ideas, Australian Traveller's Quentin Long may have the solution.

The thought of facing the massive crowds and long lines at the shops is enough to put anyone off buying presents for their loved ones, but you still want to let them know you care.

So rather than risk getting them something that will end up sitting in a drawer or the re-gift basket in a couple of months time, why not get them what Quentin calls "the best present of all" - the gift of travel and experiences.

"My mum has this great saying, 'I don't want to give you stuff you have to dust' and it's the perfect way to approach it," he told Today.

"We've got enough stuff, let's have experiences."

Quentin said people rarely think about themselves when planning a trip - sure they may be going, but it's what the family or group you are travelling with which sits at the top of your mind when it comes to the details.

So that's why giving someone a holiday or experience is the perfect opportunity to get them to do something they wouldn't normally do for themselves.

"Give people something that they really will remember and maybe scare the hell out of them - throw them out of a plane and do some skydiving,' he suggested.

Booking a tour for a loved one is something else Quentin said people may not consider, where an expert guide does all the work and they can just sit back and enjoy the scenery and history.

"And this will really support First Nations owned, First Nations-run businesses, which I think is a fantastic thing to do for anybody."
