Nineties hitmaker makes major comeback 35 years after breakout

Betty Boo has been shaking up pop music for close to 40 years, working with stars like Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Dannii Minogue, Girls Aloud and touring with Public Enemy.

Now the singer-songwriter is back with a new album and David got to catch up with the brains behind Doin' The Do in the middle of her UK tour.

Boo, born Alison Moira Clarkson, had her debut album Boomania go platinum and earned her a Brit Award in 1991 for Best British Breakthrough Act, as well as reaching number one on the US Billboard charts for Doin' The Do.

Now she is touring again and has re-released songs from her first two albums on new record Rip Up The Rulebook, Boo said she's excited to meet all the fans who have followed her journey.

"There was quite a break between the last album and I had to sort of really dig deep and find my direction again," she told DC.

"And I think I found it and I can't imagine not making records now and I run my own record label, so it's nice to be able to do it my way."

Boo was a huge voice in the female hip-hop scene of the early '90s, revealing a chance encounter at a local fast food restaurant was her big break.

"It was almost like a sliding door moment really, because we'd just seen Public Enemy at their big Def Jam concert in my local town of Hammersmith," she said.

"Me and my friends were just walking back from the show, and we saw them in the McDonald's and we just went, 'Yo, what's up? We're rappers too - we loved your show' and they said, 'yeah, come on then do some raps.'"

So the band pulled out a camcorder and filmed Betty and her friend and before she knew it, she was supporting Public Enemy on their US tour.

Now, Boo is back on stage and she told DC she would love to visit Aussie fans in the near future.

"I'd love to, I've just been coming back sort of recently so give me some time and I'll be coming down - no problem," she said.

Boo is currently touring the UK and her new album, Rip Up The Rulebook is available August 3.
