Are shorts appropriate work attire for men in the office?

With Australia well and truly in the grips of a summer heat wave this month, it seems more businessmen are opting to wear shorts into the office instead of their regular suits.
Temperatures will reach the 40s in parts of Sydney today, so Dan Anstey jumped on board the trend and showed off his pins in the Today studio this morning.
But opinion was divided on one accessory he added to his ensemble.

"I'm a fan of a tailored short in the office, just don't bring back those really long socks with the safari suits," Minister for Social Services Amanda Rishworth said.
But while Dan wasn't in full safari suit, he was sporting some printed blue socks, pulled up around his calves.
"I think I may have made an enormous error this morning then - I do have the socks pulled up full bus driver style," Dan blushed.
"Toot, toot - all aboard!"
Nationals Senator, Bridget McKenzie, agreed with Rishworth, so long as the shorts are a nice tailored cut, she thinks it is fine.
However, depending on what your profession is, if you are thinking about sporting the shorts in the office look, it may be safer to gauge how your co-workers feel about you showing your legs off in the tea room.
"Let me tell you from my view, those shorts are mighty short and mighty tight," Dan's co-host, Sam Armytage pointed out.
