Aussies making thousands selling collectibles online

Recent data shows Aussies are making thousands of dollars selling collectibles online, with four per cent even savvy enough to make a living out of it.

The research by eBay and Deloitte found around one in three Australian households has at least one collection under their roof and there can be some serious cash to be made if you know what you're collecting.

"People are collecting mostly because they love the nostalgia, but the third most popular reason is because they think it's a good investment," Today money expert, Joel Gibson told Today.

Joel said coins were the number one collectible item, with toys coming in second and fashion items at number three.

"But when you get to the pointy end with the real pros, we're talking collectable cards is the big one," he said.

"One person sold a Pokemon card in Australia on eBay for over $62,000 and another sold a Transformers Optimus Priem toy in the box for over $16,000.

"The record online in Australia was a Michael Jordan card which sold for over $58,000."

While four per cent of Aussies sell collectible items online in a fulltime capacity, Joel said with the cost of living crisis, more and more people are opting to make money off a big house clean up.

"Most people, I think, are probably doing it on an amateur basis, maybe they're collecting for fun and then they need to get rid of some of it, but more people are probably selling stuff than they used to," Joel said.
